Wool

I use two different techniques to create wool fabrics, this just depends on the type of knit you prefer to use. The first one I'll show is for a wider bigger knit, the second a tight knit. For the purpose of this tutorial I'll be using a mesh by Delure.

First start with a grey base layer and a second empty layer. In your toolbox select the paintbrush change the brush to a rectangle brush and adjust the angle to 45.

From here drag a vertical guideline to the middle of the canvas, using white, paint the rectangles down the guideline.

Next duplicate the painted layer, select Layer>Transform>Flip Horizontally. Move the new layer beside the first line and merge the two layers together. You should be left with two layers, the base grey and the white lines.

From here its all about duplicating and placing them side by side. Once you have fill the canvas, shrink the layer and continue to fill and merge, until you're left with something that resembles the image below.

Now you can apply it to a blank color. Adjust the size according to personal preference for the size of the knit. Set the layer to Soft Light and adjust the opacity.

The texture is now ready for you to add shadow, highlights and wrinkles.

The second wool is a tight knit. Start with you base color for the texture. Add a second layer and from the patterns section of the Layers tool box drag out the horizontal lines.

Next select Layers>Transform>Rotate 90° Clockwise. Stretch the lines vertically to cover the length of the canvas.

Next bump map the layer, select Filters>Maps>Bump Map, click invert bum adjust the water level and ambient level.

From here you can hide the original lines layer or adjust the opacity. I tend to lower the opacity right down so the black lines are barely visible.

The texture is now ready for shadows, highlights, wrinkles etc.

Experiment with various patterns to create different styles of knits.

P.S. I have included pictures in good faith to help you on your creating journey. Please do not steal my textures, creating your own is much more satisfying. Stealing my texture will result in a DMCA complaint lodged against you and I would hate for it to come to that.
